When deciding on a product to promote it is important to follow some basic but essential rules to maximize sales and perhaps more importantly to ensure your reputation remains sound.  Many sites make many promises, but most do not deliver on the promises and many more are not real products at all.  Follow a few basic rules and you will ensure that you choose a product or products that convert well, provide real value, and leave you with happy customers who will buy from you repeatedly.

1.  Make sure that you are willing to buy and use the product yourself.  If you are not willing to do that, then you will not really establish loyalty to it and, more importantly, you will have no internal motivation to promote it.  It is very difficult to promote a product without really having dissected it by using it yourself.  It might sell well at first, but it may prove to be unworthy of the purchasers money and time.  You could find refund requests erase your sales and damage your reputation.  If you are happy with a product, finds that it gives you the value that you expect from it, and are so confident in its value that you can suggest it to others, then you have a winning product and the motivation that you need to promote it.

2.  Avoid hype!  This sounds like common sense, and it is.  Unfortunately, for some strange reason, common sense fades into oblivion even with the most level-headed of people when it cones to internet marketing.  The reason for this really boils down to a simple situation based on a lack of information.  When a new person desiring to make money looks online for it they already know one thing.  Billions of people use the internet, so naturally there are billions of customers.  The missing link that people do not have in the beginning is that as marketers we have to FIND and SELL to these people.  Most people have no idea how to do this, but they don’t have the entire equation until after they start.  The road to doing this seems very steep at the beginning so the tendency is to fall for the stuff that sounds easy and lucrative.  Hype hides scams.  Real business online sounds like real business offline.  When choosing a product use concrete facts and figures.  A real product, with real users, with a fair price, and good reputation.

3.  Seek information from others regarding the product.  Video testimonials are the best source of information.  A video testimonial is very much more powerful than text, since it is harder to fool a person when you are looking at them and talking to them than when you write a note.  Anyone can slap a photo next to words and call it a testimonial,  but few people can be dishonest in a video and get away with it.  In addition to video testimonials on the sales page, look for random testimonials through a web search for the product.  If you find that most people like it and would recommend it, then you can be confident in it.  If you haven’t done so already, buy it and examine it for yourself.

Remember that what you choose to promote is vital to the overall success of your business and to a larger extent, its longevity.  Promoting scammy products can ruin your reputation before you even get started.  Choosing good products with a sound reputation can have the exact opposite effect.  They can build your reputation and set you up as an expert that people will trust and buy from you again and again.
